Why Try And Hack The Highline Stereo?

The main reason for attempting to hack the Highline stereo is to get it using a different navigation software.
The sat nav software is bad! I bought my 451 new in 2011 when the Highline had just appeared.
Even then, the maps were 2 years out of date. Not to mention the lack of a full postcode search.

Couple that with the cost of updated maps and the inability of smart to actually be able to order them.

This software has to be replaced to make the Highline stereo a better unit.

How Far Have You Got?

Thanks to an idea by site viewer Kuba, we have gained access to Windows CE.

Any Decent Hackers Or WinCE Coders?

If any of you get any further with this and do anything interesting, please let me know.
It's only fair to share as many of us are in the same position with this stereo.

Where Can I Get The Firmware Files?

From evilution.co.uk of course. Click here.

If you achieve anything interesting because of the firmware you downloaded here, please let me know.

Highline Hack

Changing The Startup And Shutdown Screen

This will be the one that people will try first.

Shutdown logo (400x234 PNG file with 8bit colour)

I would recommend renaming the original files before copying over your custom graphics.

How To Use The Hack File

Download the hack from the link here. Insert an empty SD card and open the main folder.

Unzip the file and copy the contents over to your SD card.

With everything copied over, eject the SD card and put it in your Highline stereo.

Start the stereo, open the face, insert the SD card and close the face.
Press and HOLD the volume knob UNTIL THE LIGHTS GO OUT BEHIND THE BUTTONS.
Press the volume button again to restart the stereo. You should soon see this screen.

Scroll down (you can use your fingers, a stylus or the wrong end of a pen).

...until you find "explorer.exe". Double tap this to run the program.

The start button and a tab will appear at the bottom of the page. Double tap the FileManCE2 tab to minimise it.

You are now at the Windows desktop, you can click the start button and fiddle with settings.
Double clicking "My Device" opens up the area similar to "My Computer" on a PC.

You will find all of the folders were the data is stored.

From here, you can copy and delete to and from the SD card.

Pre-install any graphics or applications you want to try onto the SD card using your computer.

Obvious Warning

If you delete any files from the stereo or copy over them with something else, you can fuck up your stereo.
If you plan to do any serious hacking, back up everything on the stereo to the SD card and save it to a computer.
I cannot be held responsible for anything that happens whilst you use this hack.

Issues To Resolve

There are 2 main problems that I am going to leave you to try and sort out.

Yes, you can run any WinCE sat nav program from the desktop but there is no sound.
The sound chips are initialised by the original Highline program. If it doesn't run, there's no sound.

You might think that you can add a different sat nav program and rename it so the standard Highline program
starts that instead of the original sat nav. You'd almost be right however, the Highline program is ALWAYS ON TOP.
So, no matter what you start, it is always hidden by the Highline menu program so it's unusable.

Things To Try

OTV put me on to a program called Mio Pocket which is a WinCE multimedia program. It looks interesting.

Try forcing programs to be on top so they sit over the top of the standard menu.

Try to set up the sound through the PC preferences settings.

Maybe try adding new TeleAtlas maps to the original system.
